General Studies (I to IV) 1000 Marks
  • Essay, GS I (History/Geo), GS II (Polity/Gov), GS III (Eco/Env), GS IV (Ethics). Each paper carries 250 marks.

UPSC CSE 2026 Preliminary Exam Rules & Negative Marking

  • The exam consists of Paper I (General Studies) and Paper II (CSAT).
  • Each paper is worth 200 Marks and lasts for 2 hours.
  • Paper II is Qualifying in nature requiring at least 33% marks.
  • There is a Negative marking of 1/3rd for every incorrect MCQ answer.
  • Unanswered questions will Not attract any penalty.
  • Only marks from Paper I are used for cutoff shortlisting.
  • Preliminary stage is a screening test only; marks are not counted for final merit.
  • Stage-I : Preliminary Examination (Objective)
  • Stage-II : Main Examination (Descriptive Written)
